“I’m afraid I’m not quite sure how you recovered, Mr Novak. When you were brought in, you were bleeding, broken ribs, severe concussion, not to mention brain-dead. We were afraid there was nothing we could do for you…”
Castiel nods, knowing the ways of angelic healing could not be explained to humans. Although, given the lack of power he has right now, he’s not quite sure how he managed it either.
“…all I can say is it’s a miracle. You’re a very lucky man, Mr Novak. Maybe you have a guardian angel watching over you.” The doctor smiles, pats him on the shoulder reassuringly before leaving the room.
Guardian angel, Castiel thinks and not knowing why, he turns and catches sight of a man in hospital scrubs staring back at him, eyes that are somehow vaguely familiar. A nurse comes in to check on his IV drip and when he looks back, the man is gone. He feels a pang of loss that makes no sense and Castiel puts it down to all the human pain he’s being subjected to right now. When the medication starts to drag him back into unconsciousness, he goes gladly.
He dreams of wings and flying in Heaven; of warm blue eyes that are wise and playful at the same time. For the first time in a long time, Castiel misses home.
